Yesterday. Monday. Left the B&B in Inverness and headed to Drummadroit where Urquhart Castle is. Drove along Loch Ness, looking for Nessie. Yelling her NMR. Arrived at the castle, looked around, listened to the bagpipe players (not playing at thesame time), and took pictures. Never saw Nessie. I think she's shy. The castle was in ruins, of course. Gait cool. Went back into town, bought a delicious cupcake because we felt we should since we were parked in the bakery's lot. And parasol through the Nessie shop began. Found a nice sculpture Nessie had posed for and took some pictures with it. That finished, we headed to our next "home" in Edinburgh. Arrived to a warm welcome, got settled, relaxed a not and ventured into town. Inhaled some food at the Hard Rock Cafe, then busted our butts to make it to the meeting point for our ghostie tour. Found the cross we were told to meet at, turned the corner, and saw a group of people being led by a cloaked man walking away from the cross. Crap, we were late. Hurries to catch up with the group. Cloaked dude was talking in Italian. Part of the tour? In, nope... Italian speaking tour. We're still early. Back to the cross. Ooh, another cloaked person! Hooray!! Checked in, got our tickets and away we went. Emma, our tour guide was great! Enough drama to make it creepy, but still funny. She screamed a couple times as part of the storytelling. Impressive scream. I hunk we has a great group. Good natured people, pulling pranks on each other. Went underground into "the vaults" where everything was lit with candles. Actual candles! Good stories, creepy stories. Made our way back up a bit and ended the tour with a drink and a few more stories. Figured out the bus system home with a little help, but we made it! Successful day.
And for today. We're going with it's August 2nd. It's run around and see how many abbeys we can see day. First stop was Rosslyn Chaple. Not an abbey. Fail. It's going through renovations currently, so there's scaffolding and workers all around. DriZly day and a not too impressive outside. Headed inside. Beautiful. No pictures allowed. Someone tried for a stealth shot, with extremely blurry results. Would have loved to get some shots on there. Walked around a little bit, then back outside. You can stand outside and try to get pictures of the inside, right? Doesn't work as well in actuality.
Next wS Melrose Abbey. Abbey #1. Pretty. Some nice archways, windows, spires and flying buttresses. Ot's made from pink stone. Sandstone?? I combed to the top where the bell is. Not allowed to ring it. Sad. 74 marrow, steep steps back down. I held onto the rope all the way down. Wandered around the cemetery right next to it a bit. The need to find a bathroom won and we left.
That taken care of, we headed out to Dryburgh Abbey. #2. Raining fairly well. Jokingly called it Wetburgh Abbey and similar names. Sir Walter Scott is buries there. More pretty. Lots of rooms to wander about in. Chose not to go up the uber tiny stairs in the tower jere all the way to the top. Not a viewing platform anyway. Cool trees around. Not as many arches and such and we were getting soled more than ever, so, dome.
Our hostess, Linda, recommended another abbey close to the other s and we were ahead of schedule, so away we went! Jedvurgh Abney. #3. so pretty! Tons of arches, some windows, and some cool burial things. Thre was a sarcophagus with a life sized lyong down statue of the guy on top of it. Crazy well done. Loads of pictures. Up yet more stairs. Mo rain! I loved the main room lined with archways! Time to head for home.
Stopped and took some pictures of a cool train bridge over the River Yweed. Since we were tired, wet like and didn't want to go to town, we magi Ed some pizza to our room. Good end to the day.
